The combination of generative AI technology and smartphone hardware is expected to become the main theme of the smartphone industry’s development. This integration will enable AI smartphones to have powerful AI computing capabilities without relying on cloud servers.

According to Chen Guanzhou, CEO of MediaTek, “AI applications will have huge potential in the consumer market by 2024, and smartphones will be the starting point.”

At the MediaTek Developer Conference, the company announced the release of a generative AI chip, which can upgrade the terminal device’s flagship experience. The market predicts that AI smartphones will grow rapidly in the next few years, with the market size expected to exceed 1 billion units by 2027.

Chen Guanzhou emphasized that smartphones are the most natural and intuitive platform for AI applications, with over 50 billion people using smartphones every day.

Lin Xiao, a 3C expert, pointed out that the operating power of terminal devices is a major bottleneck for AI applications, which is why most smartphones lack the computing power to run AI applications smoothly.

Although this year is considered the “first year of AI smartphones,” there is still a long way to go before AI smartphones can fully take off in the market and provide users with a seamless experience.
